Crocodile Friday Letter September 4, 2009
We have started our Reading and Phonics books for the whole class. The older children have started their Language Arts and Spelling books. We have read books such as The Rainbow Fish and continued with drawing, tracing, cutting and pasting fish and other sea creatures. When possible we identified the fish and labeled them. We try to write our names and the numerical date on each paper. The Rainbow Fish is about friendship and sharing. A book from the library, The Road to Mumbai brought up people who ask for money and food and how children should respond. It also brought up a surprising number of broken car and home windows. Children also mentioned broken in doors, missing televisions and laptops and the stranger talking to them in their yards. Fortunately children did not seem to be too upset and universally knew to tell their parent(s) or responsible adult.
We have been making objects with found shapes in the classroom. We have discovered many shapes in the classroom such as ceiling tiles and the rectangle formed by the six lights. Today we walked through East Atlanta Village identifying and photographing shapes. Dylan Willard found a caterpillar and we bought plants at the hardware store from our friend, Shannon, to feed the caterpillar. Hopefully, butterflies will be in our future.
You may also guess the number of bottle tops in the small, medium and large plastic jars on our new table. See how your child is working on their estimating.
Thanks, Mr. John
