Objectives:
To discuss how social conditions can lead to divisiveness and violence.
To appreciate how making a choice can lead to consequences.
To think about how to evaluate a situation before making a choice.
To become familiar with the series of books by S. E. Hinton that is considered to contain Young Adult Classics.
Materials:
a copy of The Outsiders ($8.00 to purchase)
the film The Outsiders
a notebook with pockets for assignments sheets, notes and entries.
Reading Schedule
Oct. 23: in class, chapter 1
Oct. 24-25: chapter 2
Oct 26-28: chapter 3 and 4
Oct. 29: chapter 5
Oct. 30-31: chapter 6
Nov. 1-4: chapter 7, 8 and 9
Nov. 5-6: chapter 10
Nov. 7-8: chapter 11
Nov 9: chapter 12
Activities:
read the novel both silently and out loud
participate in discussions of the themes, etc.
answer questions on each chapter by writing entries in a notebook
view the film
write an short essay comparing the film and the book
take a final test on the book.
Grade Evaluation
:
Entries 20% (taken up and graded at my discretion)
Daily participation 20% (A-F, based on your level of preparedness and participation
Essay 30% (a comparison-contrast essay)
Test 30% (a combination of multiple choice, matching, etc.)
