Mini-Biography Activity

General Information and Requirements:

Students will write a short biography of an important figure from post-Civil War Georgia history. In addition, students will create a portrait or image of the figure using any art materials they wish. The image that accompanies the written piece must be student-generated (in other words, it can't be copied or printed from the Internet or another source). The biography must be at least one page in length, but it can be no longer than two pages in overall length. It should be word processed, double-spaced, and with a font size no larger than 14. Students are required to have a writing conference for the biographies prior to the due date. Students are to select one person from the list below, but all students must select a different personality (there are more than 15 total choices, so everyone will get more than one option from which to choose). Please note the absence of one of Georgia's most important figures: The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It was not an oversight or slight. Since the students will spend a good amount of time on Dr. King's work and legacy as we continue our Georgia Studies unit this grading period, I wanted to ensure their exposure to additional figures of importance in Georgia history on this activity. Biographies must focus on the life of the individual as well as their importance in Georgia political and/or cultural history. The due date for this activity is Monday, April 28. This activity is worth 50 points (25 points each for the written and visual components).
