Vocabulary 5
- Atom- Are the basic building block of matter. The smallest particle of an element that can exist either alone or in combination
- Molecule- the smallest particle of a substance that retains all the properties of the substance and is composed of one or more atoms
- Compound- a distinct substance formed by chemical union of two or more ingredients in definite proportion by mass
- Substances –Matter with a fixed composition whose identity can be changed by chemical processes but not by ordinary physical processes.
- Mixture- a combination of substances in which the individual substances do not change or combine chemically but instead retain their own individual properties.

Science
Study for Vocabulary test on Monday.
Fill in the Density Chart started in class today completely. This means getting the block measurements from below and calculating the volume. It also means calculating densities for each object.
Be sure to include the units off measurement. Grams is the the measurement for mass. Milliliters and inches cubed are the measurements for volume.

Vocabulary 4
1. Reagent-in a chemical reaction a substance that reacts with another substance
2. Chemical change- A change in the chemical composition of two substances. The energy stored in chemical bonds.
3. Vaporization- the process by which matter changes form a liquid state to gas
4. Condensation- Change in matter from a gas to a liquid state
5. Sublimation- The process by which a solid changes directly into a gas.
6. Deposition- The process by which a gas changes into a solid.
7. Law of conservation of mass- states that mass is neither created nor destroyed- and as a result the mass if the substance before a physical or chemical change is equal to the mass of the substances present after the change.
Density of wooden blocks
Calculate the density of the small wooden block and the large wooden block.
Calculator use is allowed.
Last day to turn in is Wednesday
1) Make a prediction about the blocks density. Will the densities be
Lg block density = Sm block density
Lg block density > Sm block density
Lg block density < Sm block density
2) Calculate the Volume = length x width x height
3) Calculate the Density = mass/ volume
Pay attention to the measurements. Volume is measured by inches3 and Density is measured by grams/ inches3. For now all problems in science class where calculators are allowed should be worded using 2 decimal places.
Small block
Mass = 118.00 grams
Length = 5.50 inches
Width = 1.375 inches
Height = 1.375 inches
Large block
Mass = 249.00 grams
Length = 5.50 inches
Width = 1.375 inches
Height = 2.75 inches
4) Is your prediction true?

4. Volume- The amount of space an object takes up.
5. Density- How closely packed together the matter is in an object. The mass of an object divided by its volume.

Vocabulary 2
- Carrying capacity- The number of individuals in a population that the resources of a habitat can support it. A population level that the environment can support for long periods of time.
- Competition- Use of a food, living spaces or other resources by one individual that reduces the availability of that resource to other individuals.
- Emigration- Movement of individuals out of a population for a variety of reasons including overpopulation, to reduce inbreeding or changes in resource level.
- Habitat- the place where a plant or animal normally lives, often characterized by a dominant plant form or physical characteristic (for example: a stream habitat, a forest habitat)
- Limiting resource- a resource that is scarce relative to demand for it.
- Mutualism-A relationship between two individuals that benefits both. An example is the bacteria that lives in the roots of beans that fixes nitrogen. The bacteria gains a plave to live and the plant gets nitrogen.
- Natural selection – Change in the frequency of genetic traits in a population through differences in survival and child bearing of individuals bearing those traits. We are all a little different and some traits help us survive more than others do. Wood peckers with stronger beaks get more food and are able to live better because they get more food.
- Niche-The ecological role of a species in the community; The place where an animal lives, the food that they eat, the things that eat them and other ways that they interact with the whole community.
- Predator-An animal and rarely plants the kills and eats animals
- Primary producer – a green plant or other autotroph that assimilates the energy of light into food
- Primary consumer- a Plant eater (herbivore), the lowest consumer on the food chain.
- Secondary consumer- a carnivore or omnivore that eats herbivores.

Due Monday 9-21-09. Kennedy, Kimani, Hannah. This will not be accepted after Tuesday.
Finish the prblem started in class
Problem: figure out how many strides (steps) you would take to walkt eh East Atlanta Strut 5 K walk/run.
1) We figured out the length for each student to take 10 strides.
Example: the length of 10 strides for Ms. Lili is 20 ft 4 inches
2) converted to inches this equals 244 inches (12 inches x 20 ft/in) +4 inches = 244 inches
3) Find your average stride length
Ms Lili's average stride length is 244 inches/ 10 strides = 24.4 inches per stride
Round to the nearest inch per stride 24.4 inches/ stride = 24 inches/ stride
4) There are 16, 404 ft/ 5K. Then multiply times 12 to get inches per 5K.
5) find your strides/ 5K
This is the number of strides (steps) you would take to walk the 5k!

Population- all the members of the same species that live inn the same place
Community-the different populations that live in the same place
Ecosystem- all the organisms within a community and the non-living things with which they interact
Biome- a region that contains groups of similar ecosystems and climates

Adaptations
- What are the advantages of migrating? Predator avoidance. Reduced competition
- What are the advantages to having large leaves in the rainforest. To capture light on the forest floor.
- What is the advantage to having dense root systems close to the surface in grasslands?
- What is the advantage to flowering every 60 years in the desert? Or taking 14 years to grow to adulthood in the tundra? Very limited resources or very limited growing season
- What is the advantage or dormancy? No expending energy on migration, and survival during harsh conditions
