2) Seed coat (testa) - seed coat is the outer, protective layer covering the seed
3) Embryo - developing plant still inside the seed. The embryo has cotyledons (embryonic leaves), a root cap, a food source and a plumule (shoot).

1. Osmosis- The movement of water from areas of low concentration of salts to areas of high concentration of salts.
2. Chloroplasts- structures in the cell that contain chlorophyll
3. Guard cells- controls the opening and closing of Stoma
4. Stoma (s) Stomata (plural)-The opening that air comes into the leaf through. It is like a pore for a leaf.
5. Petiole- The stem of the leaf that connects it to the branch.
6. Vein- These carry minerals and water to leaves and carries away food produced in the leaf
7. Compound leaf- A leaf with more than one blade. All blades are attached to a single leaf stem. It is composed of a number of leaflets on a common stalk.
8. Simple leaf- a leaf that is not divided into parts
9. Leaflets- A leaflet may resemble an entire leafbut is on a vein of the whole leaf.
10. Midrib- The vein in the center of a leaf.

1. Xylem- Tissues through which water and minerals flow up through the plant
2. Phloem- Tissue through which food from the leaves moves down through a plant
3. Epidermis- The outermost layer of root, stem or leaf
4. Cambium A layer that separates the xylem from the phloem. The cambium is where new xylem and phloem grow.
5. Chloroplast- structures in the cell that contain chlorophyll
6. Transpiration-Water evaporates from the leaves, more water moves up to replace the water lost. This is called transpiration.
7. autotrophs- an organism that makes their own food using chlorophyll and sunlight.
8. Heterotrophs- an organism that takes in nutrients from consuming other organisms.

Test on Monday 10-19
1) Deciduous - Plants that loose there leaves and green stems (photosynthetic parts) during very cold or very dry periods.
2) Canopy - The highest part of a forest where tree leaves grow. It is the part of the forest that creates shade.
3) Forest interior - This is where trees grow closest together and there is the most shade. Shade tolerant plants grow in the understory here.
4) Understory – This is the middle layer of the forest. It contains the shrubs and smaller trees.
5) Forest edge – This space is permanently open to sunlight. It is the border between the forest and other eco-systems
6) Woodland glade - A space in the forest created by fallen trees. Sunshine reaches the ground here and sun-loving plants grow here. It is temporary because the fallen trees will be replaced with new trees over time.
7) Herb Layer- Wild flowers, ferns and other low growing plants are in this layer.
8) Forest floor - The ground in the forest. It is where decomposition happens.

- Deforestation- Destruction of and cutting down of forests- often to clear land for mining, roads, grazing of cattle-resulting in increased atmospheric CO2 levels.
- Succession- Following a disturbance, the replacement of one species in a habitat by another species. Then the replacement of that species with another until the end point ( climax ) is achieved.
- Disturbance-Any major change in population or community caused by an outside influence. Can include fire, tornadoes, hurricanes or human caused changes such as clearing land for agriculture.
- Climax forest- The end point in a succession sequence. The plants that will out-compete all the others and continue to live in the habitat until a major disturbance like fire or deforestation occur (starting the process over again).
- Competition - The use of food, nesting sites, or other resources by one individual that means that another individual is not able to use the resource.

1. Mineral-A naturally occurring solid in the earths crust with a definite structure and made up of a particular element or set of elements. Rocks can be made of one or many minerals.
2. Igneous rock-Forms when hot liquid rock material cools and hardens into a solid. There are many kinds of these.
3. Sedimentary rock- bits and pieces of weathered rock that form a new one under relatively mild pressure and temperature. They are a mix of rock with the same properties of the rocks they were weathered from.
4. Metamorphic rock- These rocks are formed when igneous, sedimentary or metamorphic rock are under very high heat and pressure. The new rock has different properties from the original rock.
5 . Rock cycle-All rocks come from rocks. They are continually changing from one to another in a never ending cycle.

The Sea Turtles watched the DVD "Amazing Planet" on tectonic plate movement on Wednesday. There is a copy at the East Atlanta Library and the call number is DVD551.41 amazing. We watched the first disc. There are 3 more in the set and they all look fabulous.

- Weathering - The breaking down of rocks into smaller pieces by natural process – we have talked about mechanical and chemical types of this.
- Mechanical weathering- the weathering (breaking down of rock) mostly through the freeze thaw process.
- Chemical weathering- the weathering ,break down of rocks, by changing them chemically
- soil- matter composed of a mix of broken up rocks and organic material along with a community of plants and animals
- Erosion- is the picking up and removal of rock fragments and other particles (done mostly through wind and water)
- Deposition- The droping off of rock fragments and other particles after being carried by wind and water
- Glacier- a large mass of ice
- Mass wasting- a large bulk of material moving down slope caused by gravity (Sometimes a land slide)
- Canyon- a steep-walled gorge carved by a river or stream
- Valley- a low lying stretch of land formed by a stream or river, bordered on both sides by higher lands
