Safety Plan as revised in January 2008
This is the GEMA plan required since 9/11.
Safety Plan for Kingfisher Academy, Inc.
January 16, 2008
Fourth revision
In general, safety is an important concern of the administration of KingfisherAcademy. We expect this school to be safe for the students and for the teachers. We require the area around the school and the neighborhood to feel comfortable having a small school located here and we anticipate that parents will always feel welcome dropping off/picking up their students from our school. Further, due to the small size of our student body, we want every student to feel at ease with the social part of being at Kingfisher. Toward that end, there is zero tolerance for bullying, rough play, teasing, etc. in the building, on the playground, in the park, on field trips, on overnight events. Our family handbook addresses this issue and discussion that surrounds this happens all during the school day. Consequences are spelled out and handled by the director.
Traffic Control
Generally, we have tried to work with the city on this, but have found it problematic. At this point, the city has painted a crosswalk for us. They still have not placed a school crossing sign. The speed limit has been changed to 25, and a sign will be posted to let the public know this. We are asking for a crosswalk sign to be placed in the middle of the road during drop-off and pick-up times. In 2007-2008, we are instituting a safety patrol squad of older students that will wear the safety belts and escort children into and out of the school. This safety patrol system is run by AAA and we will receive the equipment and training for a small fee.
Fire Safety Plans
- KingfisherAcademy (hereinafter referred to as “The School”) will have a fire drill monthly and records will be kept and filed in the business files under Safety Plans.
- Evacuation Plans will be posted in every classroom with the floor plan of the school and the steps to follow in case of fire drills.
- The school will maintain 4 currently inspected fire extinguishers, one in each zone of the building and everyone will be instructed, including the older middle school children, on their use.
- Absolutely no flammable liquids will be stored in the building.
- All exits shall be marked with lighted exit signs and a large flashlight will be placed above each fire extinguisher.
- Safety and emergency numbers will be posted above each of the phones.
- Each classroom will keep a current roll sheet and this will come with the class in case of a fire drill. Roll sheets will also contain an emergency phone number for each child’s parents.
- KingfisherAcademy will observe National Fire Safety Month by offering lesson plans that include fire safety rules to familiarize the children with good safety practice.
- We will work toward a goal of getting all persons out of the building within 60 seconds of hearing the alarm.
Severe Storm Plans
- The School will have a posted inside area for teachers to bring children in case of a severe storm that includes strong wind. At 468 Moreland, that inside area will be the main hall.
- Once a quarter we will practice a storm drill that will include bringing the children to an inside room with a storm kit that contains a flashlight, battery operated radio, cell phone, and walkie talkie.
- In the school office is a weather radio (provided by NOAA through GEMA) that is monitored all the time the school is open.
- If the school should become dangerous to stay in, due to damage from fire, flood, wind, etc. the entire school will be transported using the van and teacher’s cars to Burgess Elementary, where we will stay in the cafeteria until parents are notified.
- Should the school become damaged in a storm, each teacher will carry the emergency list of her students’ phone numbers to to let parents know whether to pick up their child at school or at the reunification point.
- If there is severe weather overnight or on the weekends that includes road conditions that might be unsafe, the director(s) will make the determination whether school will be open at the regular time. If a decision is made to close school, certain radio stations are notified and the answering machine is changed to reflect the decision for parents to call. Also, it will be posted on our website news tab.
Intruder Plans
- Kingfisher is part of a network with the Zone 6 Police Station and will be notified if there is a reason for a lockdown on our building during the school day. This could be due to a criminal investigation or due to a different kind of security issue.
- All doors to building C will be locked during the time that school is in session.
- All teachers are told immediately of the situation and children are kept inside the building, but will move on with their regularly scheduled day unless it is decided by the director(s) that it would be safer to return to homerooms.
- All classrooms have a working phone or cell phone, to allow communication with the office.
- Parents will receive an immediate written communication on the nature of the lockdown when they pick up that afternoon, if possible.
- If, for any reason, an intruder, considered to be dangerous, gets into the building, teachers will be notified and asked to take their children out through the front doors on Moreland to the Long John Silvers Restaurant at the corner of Metropolitan and Moreland. Zone 6 would be notified through 911, immediately. Teachers will absolutely stay with the students that were in their classrooms until it is determined safe to come back into the building.
First Aid and Safety Kits
- Each teacher will be given a belt bag kit to keep in the classroom and carry with them onto the playground or to the park.
- The School will keep three much larger kits, one in the office, one at the parent station, and the other underneath the bench at the far end of the hall.
- All staff will receive certification in first aid and CPR training.
Attendance and Discipline
- Absences are followed up with a phone call to student’s home
- Weapons, Drugs, Bullying signs are posted
- Students are oriented as to school discipline rules and discussions are held monthly
- Daily records of attendance are maintained
- Students may be checked out of school only by guardians or parents, unless written permission is given and homeroom teachers are made aware of the change in pick-up
- Kingfisher does not accept any student without records from the student’s previous school that include attendance, grades, and discipline.
Field Trip Safety
- All children must have parental permission before going on a field trip.
- Teachers must count everyone going into the van and coming out of the van at each stop.
- A list of the children and their emergency numbers must accompany everyone on a van trip.
- A copy of the current student directory will be kept in the van at all times.
- A car emergency bag is kept in the van that contains flashlight, orange reflectors, several tools, jumper cables, fix-a-flat and empty gas can.
- A complete first aid kit must be kept in the van.
- All adults on the field trip must have a cell phone with them.
Playground (coming and going)
- A first aid kit must be available for playground use.
- A playground calling device (like a whistle or horn, etc.) must be available to playground supervisors.
- For now, the route to the playground is on the grass, beside the chain link fence on Moreland, cutting across the Rubber Man tire parking lot and continuing on the sidewalk to the park.
- One teacher stands in the crosswalk to stop traffic so we can cross Glenwood.
Playground Safety Inspection
Once a month, the director shall walk around the playground, checking for loose screws on the equipment, for broken glass or broken toys to remove, and examining the flat area for hazards. A checklist will be marked and filed with the recreation department supervisor.
Playground Inspection List:
1. No broken glass around edges of fence or around trash cans.
2. Chains on swingset are in good condition along with the bushings that are attached to the play structure.
3. Screws are covered and screwed in tightly on the structure.
4. Broken toys and equipment are removed from the playground and disposed.
5. Fencing has no sharp wires sticking out into the play area and is fastened securely to the poles.
6. Resilient surface is present under swings and slides.
7. Picnic tables are in good condition with no splintered areas or weak seating areas.
8. Absolutely no food trash should be on the playground. All trash must be in the can.
9. A complete first aid kit must be on the playground in a secured box or inside the rec department.
Key System:
Keys to filing cabinets and keys to the school bus are hung next to the desk in the office. These are not labeled and copies are also kept in the safe.
Drop-off procedures:
Children under 6 must be escorted by an adult to the door of the school.
Children 7 to 10 are expected to come on into the building after parent drops off—no standing outside. A safety patrol club member could stand outside between 7:45 and 8:30 to see children into the building. A safety patrol pair will be responsible for opening and closing the door from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. and again from 4:00 to 4:30 p.m.
Pick-up procedures:
Children stay with their homeroom teacher until either their parent arrives or it is time for the afterschool program. The afterschool flow chart is attached.
At 3:20, the early leavers are escorted down by an adult and escorted to their cars by either an adult or a safety patrol person.
At 3:30, the school bus riders are taken to the bus by the driver and loaded.
Business Continuation Plan:
1. Business records (spreadsheets, pay sheets, child care manager system) will be saved daily on a flash drive and taken home by the office manager.
2. Back up discs for past year’s financial files will be stored in a fireproof safe at
the director’s house.
3. Original copies of insurance policies, legal papers, leases, teacher’s contracts, tax papers, important papers, etc. will be stored in the fireproof safe, also.
4. Past year’s school records will be saved for three years and then discarded.
5. Three year’s of records will be stored in a fireproof filing cabinet on the
premises.
Visitor Policies:
All visitors must check in with the office and must sign in.
A visitor sign must be on the building, in a visible location, in good condition.
Potential clients who want to tour the school must make an appointment, prior to coming by, to insure staff coverage and smoothness of the tour. This is to avoid visitors wandering around the building alone.
General Security
- The security light should be on at the front door during evening hours to prevent items from being stolen from the front of the building and to aid the police in viewing the building as they patrol.
- The school shall join the local East Atlanta security patrol to encourage off-duty police to patrol past the building several times each evening and on the weekends.
- The bus has a “kill switch” installed and needs to be locked at night.
- The bus must be taken to one of the staff member’s homes during long school breaks to prevent it from being stolen.
- A “no soliciting” sign will be posted near both the front doors.
- The school can only be toured by appointment to make certain class coverage is available and to keep strangers from wandering in to look at the building and equipment without a real purpose.
Money Controls
All checks or cash that come into the building go directly to the cash box in the office.
Teachers that are handed tuition checks or field trip money should bring it directly to the office to be placed in the cash box or in the special events field trip envelope.
Lunch money should be handed to Debbie or Dan directly and not left in lunch boxes.
Absolutely no money or checks are left in the school overnight. The office manager takes the cash box home and the closing person will carry any cash received at the end of the day home for the evening.
